Bitpanda: proving you own your self-custody wallet

Bitpanda offers the widest choice: hardware wallet (Ledger or Trezor), WalletConnect, manual message signing (paste a signature), signing on another device, or self-declaration as a fallback.

Never share your seed phrase or private key. Bitpanda only needs a signature, a small test deposit or the details it asks for in its own app. Last checked 2026-10-27. Not legal advice.

When Bitpanda asks

Where: EU (Regulation (EU) 2023/1113, the Travel Rule)

No transaction and no gas.[1]

Step by step

Sign manually (any wallet that can sign messages)[1]

  1. Select "Sign manually".
  2. Bitpanda shows a unique text string. Tap "Copy this message".
  3. Open your wallet's "Sign message" feature and paste the message exactly.
  4. Sign it. Your wallet produces a signature.
  5. Copy the entire signature, go back to Bitpanda, paste it, and complete the verification.

Before you paste it into Bitpanda, you can check the signature in the KeyProof verifier, which runs entirely in your browser. Open the verifier →

Hardware wallet (Ledger or Trezor)[1]

  1. Select Ledger or Trezor on the verification screen. Trezor does not work on smartphones, so use a desktop.
  2. You are sent to Ledger Live or Trezor Suite.
  3. Connect your device and approve the signature. Verification is confirmed automatically.

WalletConnect[1]

  1. Select WalletConnect and pick your wallet provider.
  2. Connect Notabene (Bitpanda's verification partner) to your wallet.
  3. Return to Bitpanda and start verification.
  4. Confirm the signature request in your wallet.
  5. Return to Bitpanda (the Notabene flow) and finish.

Self-declaration (fallback)[1]

  1. Tap "Can't find what I'm looking for", then Self-Declaration.
  2. Tick the box confirming the address belongs to you.
  3. Submit. Expect a manual review before the transaction is processed.

Common errors and fixes

Manual signature fails

Copy the exact text Bitpanda gives you. A single missing character or extra space breaks it. Copy the entire signature output too (EVM signatures usually start with 0x).[1]

Asked to verify a Bitcoin wallet I already verified

Verification is tied to one address. Bitcoin wallets often create a new address each time, and each new address is verified separately once it reaches €1,000.[2]

Deposit rejected

Bitpanda only accepts private-wallet deposits from verified owners. Refund: Transaction history → the rejected transaction → "Return to sender" → check the details → "Return to sender" again.[2]

Trezor verification won't work on my phone

Bitpanda does not support Trezor on mobile. Use a desktop computer.[1]

Closed the window or the submission failed

Your funds have not moved. Restart the withdrawal or deposit and the verification prompt will appear again.[1]

FAQ

Is the €1,000 a spending limit on Bitpanda?

No. It is a cumulative per-address threshold that triggers a one-time ownership check.

Can I send crypto from Bitpanda to a friend's private wallet?

No. Bitpanda only supports withdrawals to private wallets you own. Send to your friend's account on a regulated exchange instead.

Does Bitpanda wallet verification cost gas?

No. Signing a verification message does not create a blockchain transaction.
